Access HK Summer School
Access HK Summer School will recruit most of its volunteer teachers from top universities in England, Canada and US. All the recruited teachers will be volunteer undergraduates at top universities who have previously been educated in Hong Kong. This will ensure that all volunteer teachers are highly motivated, and have knowledge about the Hong Kong education system and be fluent in both English and Cantonese.
We will appoint at least 15 volunteer teachers for each school, and also keep the volunteer teacher to student ratio between 1:5 to 1:8 so teachers can have more interactions with students.
Each class has two volunteer teachers and 10-16 students. This structure is very flexible as each volunteer teacher can choose whether to combine his/her class with the other volunteer teacher, or have an individual class. This flexibility also allows volunteer teachers to do large or small group work whenever appropriate in their lesson plans.
Curriculum
Volunteer teachers are expected to implement, design and evaluate each of their own classes. These classes will revolve around teaching English to our students. The classes aim to:
a. build confidence in themselves and in using English,
b. improve listening and speaking skills,
c. teach better utilisation of correct language expressions,
d. learn how to actively ask questions in English,
e. learn practicals skills such as presentation, collaboration and interview skills.
To make each day interesting, there will be one or two different theme(s) for each teaching day (e.g. mystery, under the sea). A basic list of intended English language skills and practical skills will accompany each theme. Therefore, by the end of the summer, there will be a list of skills that each student will have learned.
